Books. Life. Wonder.
Ever look around and wonder where all the colour went?
Colour seems so sparse as I look out onto the street. I remember the day when everyone had a funky-coloured car or a mixed-mashed house filled with items with personality and expression. Outside the library window sits a parking lot filled with cars painted from the same palette. A dull grey scale looming out there in the rain. A few reds and blues dot the lot, yet each month there seems to be fewer. When I journey through rows of freshly built houses, I get lost in their similarities. I miss the world of colour I grew up in. Bold splashes of expression. Fun and laughter seemed to be found in every corner. I’ve read in a few places now that colour helps the psyche. It’s why hospitals have muted blues and whites. It’s apparently the colour of healing. Lush greens and deep browns are my favourite home tones because they are soothing and relaxing. It’s nice to settle down into the jungle I have made at home after a hard day’s work. The colour in my home is alive and flourishing. I need to water it every day, or it would be dismal and crispy. If you guessed I have a lot of plants- you’re right on the money! The pots, however, are a kaleidoscope of shapes, sizes, and colours. I pick what pot the plant might enjoy. I feel for its individual personality trait. My decor style is that of old children’s books. Where the house is filled with fun trinkets and interesting things. I love that about my home. I feel so skewed, awkward, when I walk into a home that looks like it was cut out of a magazine. I don’t know where to sit. I don’t know how to act. I was told this is for retail value, for resale, or because it’s the thing to do. Did you know there is a rule about threes? I have never been good at rules. I think the up-and-coming generation has something going for them. They have brought forward fun shapes and colours again. As if the 80’s and 90’s had been all twisted up together.
What are your thoughts on the lack of colour? Do you like the black and white with a splash of beige?
